Following the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1950 and the flight of His Holiness the Dalai Lama along with over 100, 000 Tibetans to India, it was quickly apparent that one of the most critical needs of the Tibetan Refugees was finding means to care for the many children who had been orphaned or separated by their families during the arduous escape from their homeland. His Holiness promptly recognized that the future of Tibet and its people depended upon the younger generation. With this in mind, special nurseries and schools were set up. These, in time, developed into full-fledged schools providing complete care and education to this day.
As the children graduate from the school, depending on their aptitude and ability, they were sent to various colleges and vocational training centres in India. As the number increased and ever present problem of finding accommodation in the cities became apparent, the need for separate Tibetan Youth Hostels in key cities in India to pursue higher studies and training was felt. TCV took the initiative of opening Tibetan hostels in Delhi and Bangalore with the primary aim of providing suitable and stimulating atmosphere with a Tibetan touch.
Besides providing a nurturing atmosphere for the Tibetans, the Tibetan Youth Hostel, Bangalore strives to fulfill the following aims and objectives;
- To provide a decent boarding, lodging and educational facilities
- To foster a Tibetan atmosphere for the Tibetan students thereby generating a sense of belonging and maintain their cultural identity
- To create a Tibetan forum in Bangalore where students could learn and interact about the Tibet and Tibetans.
