TCV Thangka Painting School, Patlikuhl

In the June month of year 2004, the former TCV School was shifted to Chauntra as per schedule and the management of TCV Head Office has decided to have a Thangkha Pianting Training Centre at Patlikuhl by shifting painting class students from Suja and Ladakh. And following the decision, 95 students arrived from TCV Suja to the new TCV Art School, Patlikuhl as the first batch on 3 November 2004 with 2 teachers. Later in the month of October, 21 students joined from TCV Ladakh with 1 teacher followed by 3 students TCV Dharamsala and 8 students from TCV Bylakuppe.

While in the month of October 2004, the duration of the Thangkha Painting course was extended from 4 to 5 years due to the addition of few more traditional lessons on Tibetan Art in their textbooks.

Curriculum of Painting Classes:
First Year: 1. Outlining drawing of deities in different sizes mainly about Buddha, 2. Sketches, colouring and basic learning of arts, 3. Theory lessons for painting Thangkha projected mainly on measurement and art histories and memorizing the traditional measurements of Buddha

Second Year: 1. All about basic female deities especially on Green Tara, 2. Traditional drawings of Tibetan wall hanging such as Tashi Takgyai on canvas, 3. Theory lessons about history of arts and deities especially on Green Tara, Taras and memorizing the traditional measurements of female deities.

Third Year: 1. Practice of painting Thangkha mainly Chakdor, 2. Mixing of colours, 3. Painting of Thangkha on cloth, 4. Theory lessons about wrathful deities and memorizing the measurements

Fourth Year: 1. Practice of painting Thangkhas and different Stupas and its measurements, 2. Stone colour mixing and colouring, 3. Theory lesson on proportion of different deities and stupas in details

Fifth Year: This year is basically for revision of Mendre School painting styles of deities and theory lessons that students had been learning since from first year. They learn how to apply gold and silver on Thangkha paintings which are especially ordered ones.

Tailoring Class:

In the meantime, the Art School also incorporated new trait of Tailoring Section for girls. The duration of course is 3 years and the students will learn the art of stitching and tailoring traditional garments basically but will also look into consideration the variety of needs of modern society and its demands.

Curriculum of Tailoring classes:

First Year: 1. Hand stitching practice, 2. Pants and shirts sewing practice with machine, 3. Measurements in feet and inches and memorize multiplication

Second Year: 1. Revise stitching of pants, shirts and learning how to cut pants and shirts, 2. Cutting and stitching of Tibetan shirts for male and female, 3. Traditional Tibetan Chupa for male and female

Third Year: 1. Traditional wall hanging bordering, 2. Traditional Thangka bordering with brocades, 3. Traditional dresses of nuns and monks

Thangkha Painting Showroom:

Besides the training and education on the Thangkha Painting, the students were also encouraged to work harder by giving them an opportunity to display their painting works for others especially the public. These painting works of the students were also available on sale if anyone is interested to buy.
