In the 60's when destitute and orphaned children poured into the nursery, the staff literally had to become their parents to provide much needed love and affection. Apart from taking care of the children physically, the need to educate the children suitably demanded equal attention. The then Director, Mrs. Jetsun Pema, contacted two Indian Montessori experts, Miss Chandra Bhatia and Miss Bhatia Trivedi for help. They gave training for several years.

The first group of Montessori teachers were not school graduates but they had the most important asset with them, the willingness to learn. From 1970, eventually the Montessori Education System was firmly placed in TCV. Over the years, we have made changes and innovations suited to Tibetan context, but the basic structure has remained the same. The success of the Montessori System at TCV compelled many other Tibetan schools to use our Tibetanization Montessori Teaching System.

Since the teaching aids for this system are expensive, a separate unit of staff designing and making materials for the Montessori System was started at TCV Bylakupee which was later moved to EDRC Dharamsala. Today, the TCV Montessori Teaching Aid Section has a spacious production unit with improved technical and screen printing facilities.

Major Activities

• The Centre helps meeting the ever-increasing demand for Tibetanization Montessori Teaching Aids
• Coordinates and Guide all the Tibetan Schools in the Montessori Method
• Design and Produce Montessori Equipments
• Distribution and Selling of the Montessori Method Equipments to all Tibetan Schools in India
• Organizes Short and Long-term Trainings.

So far, we have successfully trained 271 Montessori teachers who were now working in various Tibetan schools throughout the country.

In 2007, the Department of Education (DoE) of Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) has requested TCV to train 24 selected candidates for the Montessori Teacher Training at the TCV Montessori Centre for Education, Dharamsala.
