Through the 1960s until late 1970s, the main focus of TCV was on building new Children's Villages, schools and educational facilities for young destitute Tibetan children. Unlike other schools, the duty of TCV does not end with education and care of our children up to the high school level and then leave them fend for themselves. It was inevitable that soon our students would be graduating from schools and therefore providing opportunities for higher studies and technical education was a logical extension to our work for the children.
A donation of 1,000 Swiss Francs by Dr. & Mrs. G. Schmid of Switzerland in 1975 made it possible to start our 'Educational Reserve Fund'. Since then, by collecting small miscellaneous donations and, in more recent years, through donations specifically meant for the 'Educational Reserve Fund', we have been in position to send our students graduating from our schools for higher education and training to various colleges and training centers in India. Presently we have over 1500 students under our Scholarship Program and many of them are attending the top colleges and universities in India.
Since the first batch of 18 students graduated in 1979, over 4000 students have benefited from our Scholarship Program till date. TCV alumnis are working in various capacities in the exile Tibetan community and many of them have made us proud with their achievments and contributions to the community. Majority of the teachers and staff in TCV schools are former students of TCV. The number of students graduating from schools is increasing manifold and we foresee that the trend will continue for years to come as as the number of children in TCV is increasing every year. With the completion of two new TCV Schools of Chauntra and Selakui in 2004, the number of children under TCV will increase and thereby the number of students graduating from schools as well. It is under these circumstances that we request continued help and partonage from our sponsors, donors and supporters.
